Hiestand House-Taylor County Museum

The Hiestand House-Taylor County Museum, constructed in 1823, is a unique German stone house showcasing Taylor County's history. Once raided by General John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War, it boasts exceptional hand-tooled masonry work. One of only twelve such houses in Kentucky, it's a significant example of federal-style housing, surrounded by picturesque gardens and a spring house.

Jacob Hiestand, from PA, settled in KY in 1816, constructing this home in 1823. The Hiestand plantation grew to 1,000+ acres, and Jacob became a colonel in the 99th Regiment of the Kentucky Militia, raising ten children with his wife, Eve.

The Gilmore family were principal owners of the house over the next century. In 1988, due to Green River Plaza's development, the house faced potential destruction. It was then relocated half a mile north to its current site and meticulously reconstructed to preserve its rich history.

The Hiestand House is open for tours by appointment only.  Kindly give at least 24 hour notice, so a tour guide is available. To schedule your appointment, please call the Taylor Regional Archive Center at 270-789-4343 Tuesday-Saturday from 11 am -5 pm.
