The Green River Lake Visitor Center, located near the Dam, is a free and essential attraction. It features exhibits with Native American artifacts, a live beehive tree display, a turtle exhibit, a water safety demonstration, and a 1500-gallon fish aquarium. Visitors can watch a film about Green River Lake in the on-site theater.
Outside the center, visitors can explore the Atkinson Griffin Log House, which served as a Civil War hospital, enjoy picnics, hike various trails, or get a close-up view of Green River Lake through two permanent binoculars at a scenic overlook, one of which is handicap accessible.
The picnic shelters here are ideal for special occasions, family reunions, weddings, and more. Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov, and if a shelter is unreserved, it's available on a first-come, first-served basis. Amenities include restrooms, grills, tables, a playground, horseshoe pits, parking, electricity, a log cabin, lakeside trail access, and a stunning overlook of Green River Lake.
Picnic shelter options in the Green River Lake area include Satterly Shelter near Site 1 boat ramp, Big Oak Shelter near Site 1 Boat Ramp, Green River Tailwater Shelter near the spillway, and Holmes Bend Shelter (located in Adair County) near Holmes Bend Marina.
